Ingredients

  • 1 bag frozen french fries (about 400g, any cut)
  • Salt to taste (add after cooking)

Method

  1. Step 1: Load the Basket (No Preheating Needed): Open the bag of frozen fries and pour them directly into the air fryer basket. Shake the basket to distribute them in an even layer. Do not fill more than halfway — a thick layer traps steam and prevents the bottom fries from crisping. A 400g bag typically needs two batches for best results. Don't thaw, don't rinse, don't pat dry. Frozen straight into the basket is the only way.
  2. Step 2: Cook at 200°C for 6 Minutes: Set the air fryer to 200°C (390°F) and cook for 6 minutes. No preheating is necessary — the fries will start crisping as the air fryer heats up. At this stage, the fries are partially thawed and the exterior is just beginning to turn golden. This halfway point is where you shake the basket.
  3. Step 3: Shake the Basket: Remove the basket and shake vigorously to redistribute the fries. This is the single most important step for even crisping. Fries on the bottom need to move to the top, and fries in the center need to move to the edges where the hot air is most intense. A good 10-second shake ensures every fry gets equal exposure.
  4. Step 4: Continue Cooking for 6 More Minutes: Return the basket to the air fryer and cook for another 6 minutes at 200°C (390°F). The fries will deepen to a rich golden color and develop a crispy, crackling exterior. If you prefer extra-crispy fries, add 2–3 more minutes. Keep an eye on them during the final minutes — different brands and cuts brown at different rates.
  5. Step 5: Season and Serve Immediately: Transfer the hot fries to a large bowl. Season immediately with salt while they're still hot — the salt adheres to the residual oil on the surface. Toss to distribute evenly. For garlic parmesan fries, add garlic powder and grated Parmesan while hot. For spicy fries, toss with smoked paprika. Serve immediately — air fryer fries are at their crispiest in the first 5 minutes after cooking.
