A note from my kitchen: Hi, I’m Phoebe — a home cook sharing the lighter, everyday meals my family enjoys (a little less salt, a little less sugar, just because we like how it tastes). Nothing here is medical or professional advice; it’s simply what’s on our table. Cook what you love.
Our family has been easing back on salt lately, but I refuse to give up flavor doing it. Salmon is something we cook two or three times a week — it’s naturally rich and savory, and in the air fryer the skin crisps up while the inside stays tender, no hovering over the stove required. This garlic version gets its punch from garlic, lemon, and a little oil. No salt added at all. The savory feeling comes from the fish itself and the herbs, so the sodium stays naturally low.
Why it works for a lower-sodium table
- Salmon is naturally low in sodium to begin with.
- The flavor comes from garlic, lemon, black pepper, and fresh herbs — not salt.
- One serving (about 150g salmon) carries roughly 65–90 mg of natural sodium (USDA lists raw Atlantic salmon at about 44–59 mg per 100g). With zero added salt in the seasoning, it stays well below a restaurant or pre-seasoned fish fillet.
Note: These are plain numbers, not a claim that this recipe “treats” or “lowers” anything. If you have high blood pressure, heart failure, kidney disease, or another condition where sodium matters, talk with your doctor or healthcare professional about what fits your plan.
Ingredients (2 servings)
- 2 salmon fillets (about 150g each, skin on)
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 lemon (zest + juice of half)
- 1 small handful fresh dill or parsley, chopped
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- Black pepper, to taste
- Smoked paprika, a pinch (optional, for color, adds no sodium)
Steps
- Pat the salmon dry with paper towels — this is the key to crisp skin.
- In a small bowl, mix olive oil, garlic, lemon zest, lemon juice, black pepper, and herbs into a paste.
- Brush the paste over both sides of the fillets and let sit 10 minutes (skip if you’re in a rush — it’s great straight in the basket too).
- Preheat the air fryer to 200°C (390°F) for 3 minutes. Place fillets skin side up in the basket.
- Air fry at 200°C for 8–10 minutes depending on thickness, until the fish flakes easily and the center is just cooked.
- Off the heat, squeeze over a little lemon, scatter fresh herbs, and serve warm.
Tips
- Don’t crowd the basket — leave room for air to circulate so the skin crisps.
- Short on time: cook frozen salmon straight from the freezer; add about 5–8 minutes and check that it flakes easily at the center before serving.
- Easy side: roast asparagus or broccoli in the same basket (no salt either) for a two-veg dinner from one appliance.
