That golden, soft, slightly pineapple-sweet round loaf called Hawaiian bread – kids simply can’t resist it. It gets its tender texture from pineapple juice and eggs, and your bread machine makes it with one button.
Great for sandwiches or on its own; if you’ve got kids at home, definitely give it a try.
Why You’ll Love
- Extremely soft with a pull-apart crumb
- Mildly sweet, not cloying, kids fight over it
- Pineapple juice gives a unique aroma
- Fully automatic, no skill needed
Ingredients
- Pineapple juice – ¾ cup, room temperature (canned juice works)
- Egg – 1
- Softened butter – ¼ cup
- Sugar – ⅓ cup
- Salt – 1 tsp
- Bread flour – 3 cups
- Active dry yeast – 2¼ tsp
- Dry milk powder – 2 tbsp (optional, richer)
Step by Step
- Layer: pineapple juice → egg → butter → sugar → salt → bread flour → well for yeast (milk powder can go in with the flour).
- Select Basic (or Sweet if available), 1.5 lb, Light/Medium crust. After 5 minutes, check the dough: soft, slightly tacky ball; if too dry, add 1–2 tbsp pineapple juice or milk.
- When done, remove from pan and cool at least 30 minutes before slicing (sweet bread is more delicate – let it set).
- Eat plain or use for mini sliders.
Tips
- Use room-temperature pineapple juice; cold slows the rise.
- No Sweet setting? Use Basic, but watch the browning – pick Light crust so the sugary top doesn’t over-darken.
- For an even softer crumb, reduce the pineapple juice by 1–2 tbsp; the juice already provides most of the moisture.
FAQ
Q: Can I use orange juice instead of pineapple? A: Yes – it becomes a citrusy version, still soft.
Q: Why is it called Hawaiian? A: It comes from Hawaii’s Portuguese sweet-bread tradition; pineapple was added later as the signature flavor.
